The Ministry of Municipality and Environment represented by the General Cleanliness Department has removed 443 tonnes of waste and 13 animal carcasses from a 65km stretch of beaches located at the northwest part of the country under a massive beach cleaning campaign.
The carcass of 13 animals that were removed from beach areas included dugongs, dolphins and turtles, said the Director of General Cleanliness Department, Safar Al Shafi in a statement. He said that the cleaning campaign was implemented in four phases in 38 days in a row.
“The beaches from Abu Zaluf to Al Arish were cleaned first followed by the beaches stretching from Al Arish Al Zabara,†he added. Beaches stretching from Al Zabara to Umm Al Maa were cleaned in third phase of the campaign and the beaches from Umm Al Maa to Doha Al Hasin were cleaned in fourth and last round of the campaign.
He stressed that such a programme for cleaning beaches cover all areas of the country, adding that the programme is being implemented smoothly without any impact on daily routine work of the Department.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment gives high importance on maintaining hygiene at beaches and islands because they are picnic spots.
The Ministry also provided all necessary supports including workers and equipment to maintain hygiene at these places throughout the year as they received a big number of visitors especially during the weekend and official holidays.
The Director of the General Cleanliness Department has urged visitors to cooperate with the Ministry in maintaining hygiene at beaches and islands by throwing garbage on designated places and dustbins.
