Abdulaziz Al Kuwari is strongest Qatari

Abdulaziz Al Kuwari was declared strongest Qatari at last night’s conclusion of the highly anticipated fifth annual “Qatar’s Strongest Man” organised by Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF).

The first-time QSM participant will be driving a brand new car as his prize courtesy of event sponsor Saleh Al Hamad Al Mana Co. He received a mock car key of the car amid the cheers from hundreds of people in a packed venue at Aspire Park yesterday.

Al Kuwari bested fellow Qatari hopefuls including QSM 2014 winner, Talal Al Kuwari who placed second and Hadi Ali Al Marri who finished third after a grueling competition composed of a series of challenges which tested their strength and endurance at the exciting event. The five challenges included Truck Pull, Sand Bag Lift, Giant Tyre Lift, Farmer Walk and Conan’s Wheel.

The 27-year-old whose favourite sports are weight lifting and swimming said he took part in this year’s QSM for the first time with the encouragement of his coach who has taken part in the competition for the past three years.

Other competitors in the Qatari category included two-time winner and defending champion Fahad Al Haddad, Rashed Abdullah Al Marri, Abdulrahman Al Emadi, Saeed Mohammed Saeed Abdullah Nasser and Khalid Jaber Al Lakhn Al Marri.

On Friday, Kenyan defending champion Cristopher Oketch retained the crown as this year’s strongest expat. His compatriot Joseph Iroo Ekadeli and Egyptian contestant Mohammed Dweidar came in second and third place respectively.

The QSM is an annual competition that enables Qatari and expatriate sports enthusiasts who are passionate about strength training to take part in a number of challenges. With the success QSM enjoyed in the previous years, AZF has extended the competition to two days, and has increased the number of participants to 16 chosen among the 66 entrants after a rigorous series of tests including 200kg weight lift exercises and 20-metre walks while carrying 120kg weights in each arm.

Spectators also enjoyed taking part in games at the venue including Dragon Punch and King of the Hammer, bed bungee trampolines and obstacle courses.
