DOHA: Nature, a science journal that publishes fine peer-reviewed research that drives ground-breaking discovery, has published an intensive scientific report titled “Qatar puts the Pursuit of Knowledge Front and Center.”

This report presents the research efforts of Qatar University (QU) on Qatar’s development and its crucial needs. The report highlights the high regional and international ranking of QU, which is due much in part to the original achievements in research and education.

Dr Hassan Al Derham, President of Qatar University, said, “Our university has enabled Qatari citizens to become ministers, presidents of agencies, and influential members of government.”

Dr Mariam Al Maadeed, Qatar University’s Vice-President for research and graduate studies added, “Qatar University is the largest national institution serving government, society and industry in Qatar.”

The report begins by providing a background on the vision of Qatar in general and explains Qatar’s efforts in diversifying its economy. Particularly, it explains Qatar’s vision in becoming a knowledge-based economy and how QU has benefitted from the country’s interest in expanding its research and development.

Among the ways in which QU has invested in research is the inauguration of the Research Complex, a state-of-the-art research facility. QU has also developed partnerships with governmental authorities and key players in the industry, such as with Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Petrochemical Company and ExxonMobil Research Qatar, and many more major companies.

Research at QU is aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030, which emphasizes the importance of an economy centred on innovation, entrepreneurship, excellence in education, a world-class infrastructure, and efficient public services.

The report concludes by highlighting the university’s ambitious goals of the transformative strategic plan from 2018 to 2022 to develop research on the above-mentioned fields.

The plan includes also the supplementary support for graduate students through the newly established Graduate Academic Support Unit, which creates synergy between education and research, supporting capacity building and talented students, who are the driving force behind the societal developments and prosperity.
